Man allegedly strikes officer, rams patrol car fleeing Pleasantville stop
A Somers Point man paroled six months ago allegedly rammed a patrol car and injured two officers trying to flee a car stop in Pleasantville. Hajalik Smith, 24, was stopped by K-9 Patrolman Matt Laielli and Patrolman Andrew Eckert in the 400 block of West Bayview Avenue on Tuesday night, when he took off, Capt. Matt Hartman said. The vehicle struck Eckert and nearly drug him and Laielli, according to the report. Laielli was not struck. Smith then rammed a patrol car driven by Patrolman Jamal Roy head on, Hartman said. Roy was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center’s City Campus with injuries not considered life-threatening. Smith is charged with several offenses, including two counts each of aggravated assault on a police officer and assault by auto. He also faces drug offenses. Smith was released from the Garden State Youth Correctional Facility in June, after serving about 3½ years on drug and eluding charges that also involved a motor vehicle that created a risk, according to state Department of Corrections records.
