Family and friends of a man killed in Egg Harbor Township are determined to make sure anyone with information comes forward. Arturo Barrera III, 24, was gunned down late Jan. 2, inside the Vermont Avenue home where he had been living. “We are broken,” says Pat Duffy, Barrera’s best friend. “Anything that can be done to help apprehend these cowards would greatly help the possibility of my family's closure,” wrote Arty’s father, Art Barrera. Duffy along with Arty Barrera’s parents started a Facebook post hoping to draw attention to the case. “Everyone’s trying to play a part to bring this killer coward to justice,” he told BreakingAC. They are hoping to make #JusticeForArt trend on social media and draw attention to the case. “We live in a world now where pressing a button and reposting a hashtag has such power,” Duffy wrote. “My family and I are forever broken,” Art Barrera said of his son’s death. “I know we're not the only family that has been affected by a violent crime, so my sorrow goes out to all the families that have lost a loved one so senselessly.” A celebration of Arty’s life will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Fresh Start Church on Ocean Heights Avenue.
The funeral service will begin at 5 p.m. Rather than send flowers, donations may be made in Arty’s name to Egg Harbor Township BMX, PO Box 668, Somers Point, NJ 08244. It is a nod to Arty Barrera’s part in helping improve the township’s BMX track. His enthusiasm for skateboarding and biking began at an early age, and honed his talents at Patmos Park. Friends and family have shared photos and videos of his tricks.
