Atlantic City boy gets to tour his dream job

Updated: May 19

When Ebony Newton found out her young nephew wants to be a firefighter, she knew just where to go. But even the Atlantic City woman was surprised at the welcome they received last week. “I want to be a fireman,” 3-year-old Carter says in a video Newton shared with BreakingAC. So she took him to Fire Station 1, named for the city’s first black fire chief, John Jasper. “I drove past a fire station where I know the gate is always up just so he could see the truck from the outside,” Newton said. “When we arrived, a gentleman — I didn’t get his name — welcomed us in.”

After she told him about Carter’s plans for his future, she was told the firefighters would be leaving soon but he would get someone to give them a tour. Newton parked in the back, and returned to find Firefighter Ismail Samad waiting for them to show them around. Carter even got to sit at the wheel of a fire truck. It was “by far one of the best experiences for Carter,” Newton said. “Mr. Ismail was so warm and welcoming and very informal. (Carter is) still talking about his experience. I think it’s something he’ll never forget.”
